Constipation

Let's talk about POO!

Our bowel function is extremely important for good health.

This topic came to mind when I recently spoke to my Mum's carer who told me Mum wasn't constipated because her poo came out easily once a week. I was horrified and quickly explained how that was not ok! Most of us realise not 'going' 1-2 times daily makes us feel yuck, we feel wrong, some of us break out in pimples or get headaches or tummy upsets.

We are all different. Have you ever noticed that children from babies to younger school age have great bowel function, 2-3 times daily? That is probably because we as parents looked after their diet making sure they ate well and exercised naturally by just running around.

We eat 3-4 times daily, therefore we need to poo at least twice daily. If we don't, something is not quite right.

WHAT DOES GOOD BOWEL (POO) FUNCTION LOOK LIKE?

  • formed stools
  • no undigested food
  • not black (black poo could mean internal bleeding/too much beetroot)
  • feel you've emptied everything
  • usually coloured with the veggies you ate on the day
  • short transit time ie within 24hrs is good, if longer, here is what you need to do

How to help ease constipation
